Each day was sunny and +30 degrees, hard to compare to the +3 rainy/snowy weather happening now in Van..

I got to give a holler to my Malay subscribers here, Malay food is the BOMB. Aside from the usual satay, nasi/mee goreng, and chau kuey teow, I was blown away by how good the Malay chicken wings taste. SO GOOD. The Prawn Mee too, oh and the "Ghost" fish. Not to mention the drinks, milk tea, and my usual favorite ice lemon tea, which is a bit diff. because a piece of lime is added in there. Is this the usual way of making it my Malay friends?

Also, near the hotel I stayed at was a bunch of street vendors that I was absolutely impressed with. DVDs at really good quality, so I picked up some movies, and TV series including Simpsons (Season 1-7), Fawlty Towers, and Mind Your Language To my surprise I have a lady passenger by the last name Kasparaitis. As a hockey fan, I quickly associated that name with the NHL player Darius Kasparaitis that name is familiar as this player is (I think) one of the diritiest in the league. One that gives really cheap checks that could cause really bad injuries.

Then of course I had the curiosity to ask if there was any connection between the two.

me: "by any chance are you related to Darius Kasparaitis?"
Mrs. K: "Yes, I am. I'm his ex-wife."

me: (after a look of )

me: "how come you still have the last name?"
Mrs. K: "Just got divorced."

me: ()

I'm telling you it wasn't a comfortable feeling.

Anyhow, after chatting with her for a bit, she didn't seem too devastated about it, she even told me that I don't need to feel bad for her, should feel bad for him. I'm glad that she was pretty easy about it, maybe being from Vancouver helps, take a look at what I found.

I'm guessing that Darius isn't going to be having a good season this year. Good thing I don't have him in my pool.

Welcome to lifestyle 2006

So what do 3 guys do on a Sunday night in HK? There’s the reason for old age people to play these games to keep their mind stimulated and not be hit by memory loss, or other old age deterioration, but does this justify Christians to gamble?

Personally I like to play cards, especially BIG 2. I pretty much grew up playing it and I’m always in if there’s a game. However, when there’s money involved, I’m out. I have played the odd time for social reasons, but in my head I’m asking myself, is this right?

Here’s an article that I found, click here or read below:

Q: Is it appropriate for a Christian to gamble?

A: For the believer in Jesus Christ, all forms of gambling—from the office raffle to casino gambling or the state lottery—are unacceptable. "Signing up" or registering for a free gift is not gambling. It merely puts a person in a position to receive something that is to be given away, and this is the donor's way of selecting the recipient. However, in the case of gambling, a person is taking chances with hard-earned money.

Gambling clearly breaks several biblical principles which are central to a Christian's way of life. A Christian lifestyle is one that expresses faith in the loving care and provision of Almighty God, not in chance or luck (Matthew 6:33). A Christian seeks to love his neighbor, not to profit from a loss by someone else. A Christian seeks to avoid every form of greed and covetousness and to be content with what he has (see Hebrews 13:5). In addition, a Christian realizes that everything he possesses has been given in stewardship by God and should only be used in a way that honors Him.

Mr. Graham has said: "Gambling is nowhere approved in the Bible. Instead, the Bible stresses that the Christian should earn his living by honest work and effort, and this would exclude relying on chance (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12). The Bible tells us to 'abstain from all appearance of evil' (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Gambling has often done untold evil to people by making them lose money that could be used for good purposes or even the necessities of life. Money is given to us by God to be used for good, not evil. Anyone seeking to do God's will should not be involved in gambling."

He goes on to say, "Gambling is also wrong because of the motives involved. Some people gamble for thrills and excitement. Others gamble because they have a greedy and covetous attitude about money. Some gamble out of a false belief in luck. All of these motives are wrong for the Christian, for they are all self-centered and materialistic." Passages in the Bible which warn against greed and covetousness are Exodus 20:15,17; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; and Colossians 3:5.

An article in Christianity Today magazine points out that the gambling industry and government often present a false picture of the benefits of gambling and the size of the problem it creates. "The cumulative effect of thousands of failed marriages and careers, poisoned by compulsive, addictive gambling, brings with it dire symptoms from which all of us suffer." A person who struggles with gambling addiction and the resulting troubles should seek help immediately. One supporting organization is Gamblers Anonymous, P.O. Box 17173, Los Angeles, California 90017. According to 1 Corinthians 10:13, God is faithful to provide a way to escape any temptation.

I do agree that in some cases that there can be a potential danger for people when they go down the path of gambling, as stated in the article. So, should I still do it even I know that I’m only doing it for fun? Is it kind of like drinking alcohol before driving? You know there’s that potential ending if you drink and drive, and here are the 2 paths, sober driving or drunk driving, which route should I go?

Also, I look at the purpose of gambling? Is it really for the sole purpose of fellowshipping or socializing? I would like to believe that that is the case, but I have a hard time believing that when there’s money involved. Unfortunately money makes the stakes more exciting, and the more money is at stake, the more excitement there is. Is there anything wrong when using money in this way?

So...who wants to play BIG 2 with me?
